Last week, I did a podcast episode that was all about… how to finish up 2017 on a strong, focused note.
If you missed that one, you can go on my website, or iTunes, or Soundcloud, or wherever you get your podcasts, and you can listen to it there. It’s a good one, and it’s a good prelude for THIS episode…
Because today, in this episode, we’re looking into the future. We’re looking at… 2018. Your goals. Your plans. What you want to create and experience. All that kinda stuff. Because you and I both know, 2018 is going to be here in, like, 2 seconds. It’s coming. So let’s get ready.
Let’s go through a couple questions to help you figure out your top priorities for 2018—so you can focus your time and energy where it really needs to be.
Here’s your first question:
– What are 3 things you really want to experience next year, in 2018?
Big experiences. Fancy experiences. Simple experiences. Dinner parties. Trips. Celebrations. Quiet moments at home.
Whatever kinds of experiences you want to have next year—whether it’s renewing your wedding vows on the beach in Cancun, or studying Italian, or a solo hiking trip, or getting your own office outside of your home and decorating it exactly the way you want, or upgrading your bedtime routine, whatever kinds of experiences you want, write ‘em down. Make a list. You can pause this podcast while you think and write, and hit PLAY again when you’re ready.

OK, next question.
– What are 3 things you want to create or contribute next year?
Maybe you want to create a new series on your blog where you interview people and ask how they met their husband, wife, or partner. Like a “true love” blog series.
Or maybe you want to create a new revenue stream for your business. A series of workshops, or an online class, or a new service package.
Or maybe you want to contribute something to your community, or to your workplace, like a mentoring program to bring more women into positions of leadership.
What would you like to create or contribute to the world in 2018?
This can be stuff you’re paid to do, like part of your job, business, or career. Or not. That’s up to you. Write down your list. And again, you can pause this podcast while you think and write.

And if you can’t think of anything right now, no problem. Come back to this question later.
OK, here’s our last exercise. Imagine that it’s August 2018. One year from now. Imagine you’re writing an email to a friend to give her an update on your life.
Your email starts with, “Oh my god, this last year has been so beautiful, so amazing, and here’s what happened…”
And then… fill out the details on what happened.
Write this imaginary email AS IF the amazing year has already happened. What did you do? Where did you travel? What have you changed? What’s different now? What are you proud of? Write it out, just like you’re giving a recap to a close friend.
I call this Pre-membering. Or Pre-capping. It’s like you’re “remembering” or “recapping” your exciting year BEFORE it actually happens. My best friend Frances and I do this all the time, and it’s such a great mind-exercise.
Sometimes, writing 1 imaginary email to describe your hopes and dreams is more effective than a 10-day business planning retreat.
Try out the pre-capping email exercise and see what you end up typing. The thoughts that pour out of your mind and out your fingers might really surprise you.
Thanks for listening.
I hope this podcast got your wheels turning, in a good way.
I hope you’re feeling a little clearer about what you want to experience and create in 2018.
And if you’re thinking, “I’ve got so many dreams and it’s so exciting AND ALSO I feel overwhelmed! I need some love, some support, some cheerleaders…” girrrrrl, I’ve got you.
As you may—or may not—know, I run so many cool programs on goal-setting, business development, confidence and empowerment, and creating more of whatever you crave.
If you haven’t checked out my website in a while, have a look. I’ve got lots of programs coming up in 2018… and retreats in beautiful destinations… and dinner parties… and options to work with me 1-on-1… and lots of free resources, too.
The website is SHYATT.COM. That’s S-H-Y-A-T-T-DOT-COM. It’s all there.
And if we’re not friends on Facebook, we should be, because I usually announce new programs there, first, before anywhere else. And I share lots of encouragement there—photos, inspiring quotes, new podcast episodes, all that jazz.
Before I say goodbye for today, I want to remind you that YOU are the BOSS of your life. You’re the Boss, the CEO, the Human Resources Director, the Visionary Leader. You’re the Queen. This is your life, your legacy. You get to shape things in any way that you want. Whether that means running a multi-million dollar business, or working part-time 10 hours a week so you can be home and make homemade pizza with the kids, or traveling across America in an Airstream trailer, whatever you want, you can create it.
I believe in you. I hope you believe in you, too.
Keep reminding yourself that nobody can steer your life in the direction you want… except for you.
Onward we go, into 2018 and beyond. The best is yet to come.
It’s GO time.
P.S. There are a few spots left in my Make a Scene Mastermind program 2017-2018. If you’re interested, apply here. After applying, you and I will have a phone conversation to discuss the program together.
