Okay, listen up, y’all coaches. People ask me all the time how to attract clients. This entire podcast was developed to answer that question and help coaches attract wealth and live rich lives, literally and metaphorically. How do we rise above the noise on social media? How do we get clients?
And also, I’ve always worked with my coach entrepreneurs to help coaches not just get clients and get paid, but to create an impact and a movement, because let’s face it, us life coaches, we’re such amazing humans. I mean, but really, life coaches literally devote themselves to bettering the human condition, reducing suffering, and making the world a better place. I mean, how freaking miraculous, right?
There are coaches like my friend, Lisa Smith, who helps parents stop yelling and parent from a place of peace instead of anger, and all of my brilliant BARE coaches who help women stop obsessing about food and body, like Risa Kuhlman, who specializes in brides. I mean, hello. How many of us who are married would have killed to have had a life coach like Risa help us zip the dress and not be bridezillas about it, and Leah Badertscher, who runs The Art School, and she helps artists not only create beautiful art, but make money as artists.
These are amazing human beings who are doing great work in the world, but how to do great work in the world and also get people’s attention. Like, you’re doing great work, you’re serving your clients, but so many coaches struggle to figure out how to create the come-with-me vibe over the look-at-me vibe. You all know what I’m talking about. There’s a difference.
And for example, let’s talk about my BARE book. You know I have a new book out, right? I hope you know. The title of it is BARE, a seven-week program to transform your body, get more energy, feel amazing, and become the bravest most unstoppable version of you. But that didn’t start out as a book. BARE started out as something I noticed, a gap that I felt was missing in the coaching that I was doing with women around food and body.
I’ve been coaching women on food and body issues for almost 11 years now and I noticed that I could help women lose weight, and so I listened hard and I studied what was happening with my clients and what were the things that worked with clients to create joy and freedom and peace inside of them, regardless of how their bodies were showing up. And then I created a process, a manifesto, and now it has become what I hope is a movement.
So let’s talk about that. Let’s talk about, in today’s episode, not just how do I get paid, but how do I create a movement? Here we go. Here’s your Two-Minute Pep-Talk for the week. And this is the part of the show where I share some encouragement and inspiration to get your week started off right. And I try to keep things to 120 seconds or less.
Now, if there’s one question I hear from business owners, freelancers, and other self-employed service providers, more than any other question it really is, where are my clients hiding and how do I find them? Now, last week, we talked about pricing, which is also one of the top questions I get, but it usually is, “Where are the clients?” And you want to know where your clients are hiding?
It’s a trick question, because they’re not hiding. They are everywhere. There are 320 million people living in the United States alone, and according to one report, six out of 10 are dealing with a health-related problem; smoking, drinking, stress, a sedentary lifestyle and other poor self-care habits. We’re one of the most unhealthy first world nations in the world.
So, if you’re a health coach, a wellness specialist, a BARE coach, a fitness trainer, or a massage therapist who specializes in pain relief or stress reduction, that’s 192 million potential clients who desperately need your services. And that’s probably a lowball estimate. Clients, clients, everywhere you turn.
Step outside and you’ve got a six out of 10 chance that you’re going to walk smack right into a potential client. Your clients, they’re not hiding. They are freaking everywhere. There are 320 million living in the US alone and 92% of people do not achieve their, quote en quote, New Year’s goals and resolutions. And let me tell you something, if the resolution is about shrinking your body, we’ve got to come up with better resolutions, right?
So if you’re a life coach or a productivity specialist, that’s 294 million people that you could potentially help. Have you personally introduced yourself to one potential client, even just one lately? 200 million Americans claim that they would love to write a book, but most struggle to write even one chapter. Thank god you decided to become a professional writer editor because you’ve got 200 million potential clients to support; enough to keep you wildly busy for several lifetimes.
48% of Americans dream about opening their own business. That’s almost five out of 10. And if you are a business strategist, a marketing specialist, a website developer, or a project manager, look around the coffee shop, the gym, the waiting room at your doctor’s office, or your yoga class. Half the people in the room you’re in right now might be really interested in your services.
Your dream client could be doing a downward facing dog in the row right next to you right now. I could go on and on, touching on pretty much every industry and every human need under the sun. You get my drift. The point is, if you’re feeling frustrated because you don’t have a long eager line of customers and clients who are dying to work with you and you’re wondering, where are they hiding, that’s not the right question because they’re not hiding. But you might be hiding.
You might be hiding in the security of your home office, your studio, or behind a computer screen instead of making a scene and bravely putting yourself out there. You might be hiding your real personality because you’re afraid of seeming unprofessional or upsetting certain people who don’t share your bold beliefs.
And you might be hiding behind a wall of excuses about why this isn’t the right time to promote yourself, take a risk, or play full out. You might be hiding in a variety of ways and that’s why you can’t seem to find any clients. It’s not because your clients are hiding. I think you might be the one who’s hiding and it’s time to change the conversation in your own mind.
It’s time to say to yourself, “My clients are everywhere, so what am I doing to reach them? What am I doing to connect with them? What am I doing to make it easier for them to notice me, to get to know me, and to trust me? Do I introduce myself to people regularly, or do I stay silent? That line of questioning will guide you in the right direction and bring the right clients to your doorstep, shop, checkout screen, or inbox.
Now, you’re not going to earn much of an income or help anyone if you continue to hide, and you know it. It’s time for bold, courageous action, and I know you can do it. Your clients are waiting for you to come out of hiding and your business depends on it.
So, here’s what we’re going to do in today’s episode, because hiding’s going to get you nowhere, we want you to come out and make a scene and create a movement. So, later in today’s episode, you’re going to hear just how to do that in the most fun way possible.

Okay, it’s time for an interview. And today, I’m speaking with the amazing coach, Dr. Michelle Mazur. She’s also the author of 3 Word Rebellion: Create a Message that is Bigger than Your Business. She is the host of The Rebel Rising Podcast and founder of Communication Rebel. She’s a researcher at heart with a PhD in communication, so obviously she’s the perfect person to help us dive into our unique messages.
Now, I was recently a guest on rebel Rising and I was being interviewed about my BARE book and I feel in love with Dr. Michelle and her 3 Word Rebellion process. And in fact, I’ve had both my masterminds work on their 3 Word Rebellions. And I thought, I have to have her on this show so that everyone who listens, all of you coaches, could benefit from this genius. So, let’s talk to the fascinating Dr. Mazur. I know it’s going to be a riveting conversation, so let’s get crack-a-lacking.
Susan: Welcome to the show, Dr. Michelle Mazur.
Michelle: Thank you so much for having me, Susan, I am so excited.
Susan: I am so excited too because, okay, for all of you rich coaches listening, Dr. Michelle had me on her show to talk about the BARE book and she sent me an email right before the interview and said, “Hey, I’m sure that Cher, who is my podcast PR lady, I’m sure that told you all about my 3 Word Rebellion and I’m going to weave that into the interview.” And I was like, “I don’t know about your 3 Word Rebellion, girl.” So I quickly went and educated myself and I was like, “Oh my gosh, this is so great.” And because it’s some of the questions when I – when I help coaches create communication plans, you use a question that I use, which is like, what pisses you off? But I really like your framework a lot better in terms of creating a 3 Word Rebellion. So, why don’t I, just right off the bat, let you tell my audience, what is a 3 Word Rebellion?
Michelle: So, a 3 Word Rebellion is a one-of-a-kind message that encapsulates the change that you want to create for your people, but you’re doing it in a way that it is compelling and curiosity-provoking. So, some example 3 Word Rebellions are, Start with Why, Simon Sinek. And that’s a great one because he tells you exactly what you need to do, but then you start wondering, “Well what is my why?” Or even the 5 Second Rule, with Mel Robbins. When I first heard about that, I was like, “What the heck is this rule and do I need to be following it. And it led me on a Google search.
Susan: Yeah, same here. When I was like, “Ooh, what’s this 5 Second Rule?”
Michelle: Yes, I went down the rabbit hole because I saw her on an interview on Facebook and she mentioned it and I was like, “Should I be following this rule? What is this rule?”
Susan: So, let me just back up and say, once I downloaded your freebie on 3 Word Rebellion, I’m like, “This is so good. I need all of my mastermind clients to be doing this,” because I’m so big on having people create a communication plan of whatever ways you want to communicate, whether it’s email, blogs, podcasting, Facebook ads, whatever, but you need to have a consistent plan. And one of the questions I ask is, what pisses you off? And then create the life coachy response to that. But the 3 Word Rebellion, I think, takes it even further in that you’re creating a movement with your 3 Word Rebellion. You’re not just talking about a topic. You’re rallying the troops, if you will, to create a groundswell and a movement for a message that’s bigger than you, Dr. Michelle, or me, Susan Hyatt.
Michelle: Yes, that’s exactly is, because if you want to be known for your work, if you want to create change that is centered in your work, you know, you can’t work with everyone one on one. So having a message like this creates a space of belonging for people who think the way that you do and are pissed off at the same things you’re pissed off at and it allows them to come in and raise their hand and say, “Yes, I’m for this too, sign me up. How can I help you spread this message?” And that is so very powerful. And it’s transformative. And really, I believe when you have a 3 Word Rebellion, you can transform your people, but also transform how things are done in your industry, or even the world.
Susan: Well, and this really speaks to the heart of who I am as a person. I consider myself a naturally born rebel. I’ve always been pretty mouthy. And in fact, my second-grade report card from Catholic school, the conduct section was, you know, “Susan defies and disrespects authority,” which was considered a really bad thing in Catholic school in second grade. But it’s what I get paid to do today is to have a healthy disregard for the status quo.
Michelle: Yes, yes and I’m right there with you.
Susan: Well, and so, I guess one of the things that trips me up, let’s just walk through the framework of the 3 Word Rebellion. So, one of the questions you ask is, what are you rebelling against? And so, let’s give some examples. For me, it’s diet culture with the BARE book.
Michelle: Yes, for me, it’s about following formulas and thinking you need to be someone else to have a successful business, that you can’t double down on who you are or what you believe or what your values are, that you have to use like slimy, sleazy, you know, NLP triggers and psychological triggers in order to make sales, that it is just about making sales, it is not about creating relationships. So I’m rebelling against – I have so much that I’m rebelling against, Susan.
Susan: Yeah, I mean, I love everything that you just said. I was actually just having a conversation with one of my colleagues who was in one of my masterminds a few years ago. And then, the next year, she decided that she was going to hire a pretty popular male coach, who operates in the internet marketing space of a lot of what you just described you’re rebelling against. Honestly, there is an online bro-fest I’ve always stayed away from just naturally because, honestly, it feels like overgrown frat boys who have this club that they don’t want women or people of color to be a part of. And even when I was in college I didn’t mess with frat boys, so I’m sure as hell not doing it now. And I’ve just stayed away from it. And she and I were talking about the fact that what they teach is really everything you just said, like trigger tactics and scarcity tactics and things that are not feminine at all. And I’ve always been like, hey, fly your freak flag. Whatever makes you a weirdo, that’s what we want to know about.
Michelle: Exactly. Exactly, because I feel like that kind of marketing – I mean, there are serious ethical problems with that kind of marketing. You can use some of those triggers ethically and it’s okay because it’s helping people make a decision. But when you’re using it more as a fear tactic, like, “Oh I don’t want to miss out on this and I better pay $2000…” and you’re doing it because you feel that scarcity or that FOMO, that’s not a great way to run your business. And it isn’t feminine at all.
Susan: No, and so we’re asking what are you rebelling against, what pisses you off, and then what’s next?
Michelle: So, the next part of this is really getting dreamy, moving past the how and asking, what change do you want to create in the world? Because I firmly believe that your message needs to be positive. It has to be about what you’re creating for your people. And rebelling is not enough. I’ve seen this again and again in social movements, and the framework comes out of social movement theory. And in social movements, like I remember the Occupy Wall Street movement. They were against the 1% having 90% of the wealth, and they were out there and they were marching and they had no clue what they were going to change or even like a roadmap for what that change would look like. And when they’re out there, that was great. They had a lot of momentum. But because they didn’t have the leadership, they didn’t have the vision, that movement dies.
And so, as change-makers, as rebels, we have to create a vision for the future. And the important thing here is when you’re doing these exercises, it’s not about how am I going to do this, what are the steps I’m going to take to have this kind of impact? It’s more about getting into that what if space, that space of possibility, and writing about how you would like to see the world and what kind of life you would like to have for your clients, what is that change that you want to create? Because that really becomes the fodder for where the 3 Word Rebellion lives. Like, the rebellion part is just the start, and that will give you great positioning in the marketplace. It will help you figure out where you’re different. It’s going to give you content for days for social media, blogs.
Susan: Because honestly, like, when I am helping entrepreneurs create a communication plan, I’m like, “You might be one of those people that can easily riff on what inspires you all the time, but I find it so much easier to brainstorm on what pisses me off and then come up with the coachy solution to it. So yeah, content for days on what’s like an irritation.
Michelle: Oh, absolutely, and I think, when we’re creating that change, it also gives us this opportunity as coaches, consultants, to really look inward and think about, well what is my process? Like, when I’m with clients, like, how am I creating change for them and formalizing that a little bit more so that you can explain it in a way that’s super easy and doesn’t take like 30 minutes.
Susan: Right, I mean, I feel like this work is so important because it gives you a quick – let me just say, it’s been very helpful for me as I am going on shows, like you are, promoting the book. It creates an easier sound-bite to be able to talk about my work in this way that doesn’t take as much time, because as you know, if you’re going on TV or podcasts – obviously we have 30 minutes here on the podcast, but if I’m going on a TV show where I have a three-minute segment, I don’t have the luxury of explaining. So having a 3 Word Rebellion, I think, is just a beautiful way to start off. Now, some of the constraints that you put on coming up with your 3 Word Rebellion is where I’m still working on it. I don’t feel like I have mine totally nailed yet because one of the things that you talk about is that it’s got to be framed in the positive.
Michelle: Yes, because people are more attractive to the positive. A great example that I stumbled on this, going back to talking about Mel Robbins, is like, Mel Robbins has a book before the 5 Second Rule, which I didn’t even know I had. And it was called Stop Saying You’re Fine. So that’s a negative, and that book didn’t really go anywhere. Like, I didn’t even remember that I had it. It was on my Kindle. I have read that book and it didn’t stick with me. I didn’t even remember who she was. And then she comes out with The 5 Second Rule, which is more positive, it’s more forward thinking, it’s more compelling, that curiosity piece, and her career takes off. So I think having that positivity – and I think there’s some times where you can do a little bit of a blend. For instance, when Beto O’Rourke was running for Senate in Texas, his 3 Word Rebellion was, “No PACs, just people.” So, he was summarizing what he was against in two words, and then giving us another two words for what he was for and what his organizing principle was.
Susan: You know what, that’s actually great for me to hear because that’s kind of what I’m stumbling around. Like, I’ve got a couple of different things with BARE where I say, you know, wage gap not thigh gap or diets don’t work, and things that I say that I’m like, how do I frame it in the positive? I mean, BARE is framed in the positive.
Michelle: Yes, it is.
Susan: But when I’m talking about – you know, when I was brainstorming around it, I was like, “Okay, but I want to say stop dieting.”
Michelle: Exactly, and another template to think about is the choose this over that. And so on my show, I interviewed the author Amber Rae, and she has a book called Choose Wonder Over Worry. Like, that is such a great example of a 3 Word Rebellion because, you know, if you’re a worrier, like I’m a worrier, it’s like, oh well what would it be like to choose wonder and how do I choose wonder? So that makes you want to go explore and buy her book. So I think there’s ways, you know, if you want to have that foil in your 3 Word Rebellion, there are definitely ways to do it, but it’s really about summarizing that rebellion in just one or two words, and then following it with the change that you’re creating.
Susan: And so I do think that visualizing the change you’re creating is super key to create this 3 Word Rebellion because when I visualize the world that I’m creating, it’s, you know, what would it be like for girls and women to be free from food and body obsession and a world where women had social, political, economic equality because they’re devoting their time and energy to their goals and expanding their life instead of shrinking their waistline. And I think for all the coaches listening, when you are able to really think about, okay what kind of change am I trying to make in the world, it just makes it so much easier to narrow in on who it is you want to serve and what problem you want to solve.
Michelle: Yeah, and I have found that for me as well because what I know from my client practice is that all of the people I work with are doing business a bit differently. And when they’re doing business a bit differently, it’s hard to describe what you do. Like, it just is because you have a different model, a different thought process around it, different beliefs, different values. And so people want to compare you to everyone else that’s in the marketplace when you’re not. So, having a way to articulate that where it makes people want to know more is just so critical. It’s so foundational to your business because the other thing that I find for myself, having my own 3 Word Rebellion – which is 3 Word Rebellion, of course – and when I see my clients, they get this confidence that I haven’t seen before to share their message.
And I also feel like it’s easier for them to show up every day because one of the other creative constraints about a 3 Word Rebellion is it’s not about you; it’s about the audience. And so, when you have this message, you are excited to get up every morning and share it because the goal is to get the idea into more people’s hands. And when you show up in that energy of, like, it’s not about me, it’s about more people getting this message, everything changes in your business.
Susan: I agree with you 100%. I mean, this is one of the reasons why I encourage, especially new coaches, to come up with a signature program, because they can talk about the program instead of worrying about talking about themselves. But just in overall business, the 3 Word Rebellion gives entrepreneurs the confidence to talk about what they’re trying to do because they’re not stumbling over an elevator speech, you know, trying to explain this very elusive thing called life coaching. I love it.
I created a – we’ll put it in the show notes too, but I created some templates for coaches to talk about coaching in a way that didn’t make them feel weird. And I really think, now I need to just have everybody do this 3 Word Rebellion so that they can have a quick way to say, like, whatever it is, wage gap over thigh gap. I love saying, just as an elevator speech, not a 3 Word Rebellion, but when people ask me what I do, depending on who I’m talking to, I either say, “I help entrepreneurs make money,” or, “I help women stop dieting.” And they’re like, “Wait, what? Why would you do that?” Because we’re raised in diet culture, everybody thinks they should be on a diet, you know.
Michelle: And the cool thing is it creates conversation, because when I introduce myself, they’re like, “What do you do, Michelle?” I’m like, “Oh, I create 3 Word Rebellions.” And they go, “What is that?” And then I can have this conversation about what they’re rebelling against, what change they want to create. And then I say, “Hey, I take those two pieces of information and I create with you this message that is compelling and curiosity-provoking that you can lead with in their business. And they’re like, “Oh…” like they get it. and it’s conversational and it sounds different. It’s not just like, “I help X do Y so that they can Z,” even though that’s great when you’re first starting out. Like, it gives you a place to start. But it’s such a conversation starter. So I’m not surprised when you say, “I help women to stop dieting,” that people are like, “Oh, what does that mean? What does that look like?”
Susan: I know, and it’s just rebellious in nature. And what have you noticed? We’ve already talked about confidence, but what are some other things you notice happen for people when they claim and feel empowered to talk about their own 3 Word Rebellion?
Michelle: Yeah, I would say, just from a more tactical standpoint, when you claim your 3 Word Rebellion and you have all that of that messaging and all of those ideas, your business becomes easier because you know what to write in your copy. You know what you should be posting on Instagram. You know how to pitch yourself for podcasts or speaking gigs or to get in the media, because really, that 3 Word Rebellion and all the messaging associated with it is done for you already and now you just have to sit there and write the Facebook copy or, you know, the sales page. And that is such a better place to start than, you know – we were talking before the interview – you buy a course on Facebook ads and it’s like they give you all of the details about how to set up Facebook ads and targeting and audiences and it’s all in depth, and then they say, “And write the copy.” And then they go onto how to track the success. And it’s like, the copy part is the most important part.
Susan: The content, right.
Michelle: Yes, that content. And so, I love it when my clients tell me, oh my gosh, that document that you put together at the end of working together, I go back to that almost on a daily basis to create my content, or if I’m writing a new sales page it’s always there for me, and you never have to stare at that blinking cursor again. So I love the ease that it creates. And I also think the other thing that it does, it really eliminates the comparison trap that we can fall into as life coaches, business coaches, brand messaging coaches or consultants, because what your three word rebellion is doing, it’s really creating you as the only person who does what you do because, frankly, there are lots of people who can work with you on your brand messaging; lots and lots of people.
But if you want a 3 Word Rebellion then you come to me, because I’m the only one who’s delivering on that. And that feels so good because when somebody says, “I do something similar to you,” you’d be like, “No, actually we’re quite different from each other and that’s amazing, because the people who love me would probably not love you, and the people who hate me would probably love you instead.” So it feels really good to be in this place of just owning the space of what you do and claiming that expertise and realizing that, yeah, I’m the only person who does it in this way.
Susan: I love that so much because a lot of the coaching I do with coach entrepreneurs is helping them ditch the compare and despair stuff and really own who they are and what they bring to coaching. And so the 3 Word Rebellion is, I agree, an excellent way to diminish that because this is what I have to offer in the world, this is what I’m excited to talk about. So, on today’s episode, we’ve been talking about rebellion and creating a movement. Dr. Mazur is so fascinating and I love her process, and it’s such a juicy topic because this is very different than just trying to have cute copy and slam an offer down someone’s throat and do a money-grab.
So many of us are so turned off by many online marketing techniques because the intention behind it is not in service. It’s just to take what you can take, as opposed to, what I like to say around here, we’re palms-up. We are in service to our clients, versus palms-down, trying to do a money-grab.
Now, obviously, you guys know, I think we should all be paid for our services, but this is about crafting your best work and using your energy to give birth to a movement. I love the process that Dr. Mazur talks about and the questions that she asks, like what irritates you or pisses you off? What do you want to do to make the world a better place? And using these questions to craft a 3 Word Rebellion.
So, I really got to work on my own for BARE, and I’m still working on it. I came up with a bunch of different battle-cries for BARE. I have a BARE manifesto. One of the working slogans that I’ve been using for BARE that I love is, “You only get one body, give it love. You only get one life, make it count.” And I also talked a little bit in the episode about saying, “Wage gap, not thigh gap.”
But I still, you know, this process is going to take some time. So my call to action for you today is to get out a piece of paper, get your journal and get to work on creating your own 3 Word Rebellion. As I mentioned, I have had my masterminds working on this.
At the very minimum, what this is going to do if you create a battle-cry, you create a command, you use that to direct your audience and create the change that you want to create, at a minimum, it’s going to help people understand what it is that you’re all about. It will, at a maximum, create a groundswell for your work and get people behind it.
So, again, as you are working on this and thinking about, okay what am I rebelling against, was a question. The next prompt was, it pisses me off that… And then, thinking about what is the change that I want to create. And I want to live in a world where… what is going on?
So, if I’m answering those questions about BARE, I’m saying that I’m rebelling against diet culture. It ticks me off that women diet most of their lives way and that eating disorders are on the rise. And I want to create change and that girls and women can feel comfortable in their own skin and live in a world where women are more obsessed with expanding their lives than shrinking their bodies.
